What is Sciatica?
It is a type of lower back pain you feel that is accompanied by a tingling sensation. This tingling sensation can spread from the back to either or both legs. Hence, this pain is called sciatica as it travels along the sciatic nerve through the leg. Sciatic pain is provoked by several conditions, e.g., herniated disc, central canal stenosis, etc.
What are the causes of Sciatica?
Any condition that can irritate or press against the sciatic nerve can lead to sciatic pain. Any bony spurs or herniated discs in this area can lead to sciatica. Common conditions where sciatica pain is experienced:
- Spinal canal stenosis
- Slipped disc or herniated disk.
- Tumors
- Spondylolisthesis
- Pelvic fracture
- Severe muscle spasms of the lower back or thigh.
- Shortening of muscles (piriformis syndrome)
